Materials scientists or lead technologist study the structures and chemical properties of materials, preferably experience in ferrite or magnetic materials. Based on those studies, they make decisions on how the material is to be processed during manufacturing in order to optimize its properties. The desired properties may be mechanical, electronic, thermal, optical, and/or magnetic. Using this interdependence of structure, processing, and properties, they develop materials for new products or enhance existing ones. Related fields include solid state physics, continuum mechanics, and, especially as it relates to LPM, magnetic materials and its chemistry. Characterization of the structure and properties of materials is an important aspect of materials science. Materials scientists often specialize in specific areas such as ceramics, polymers, electronic materials, or metals. In basic research, materials scientists discover the physical mechanisms governing material behavior. In applied R
